The Special Natural Reserve of the Sacred Mount of Oropa.
Surface area: 1,500 hectares,
Elevation: 750 – 2,388 metres,
Year of founding as a Special Natural Park of the Piemonte Region: 2005.
The dell of Oropa is an striking environmental and scenic setting that contains the devotional complex of the Sanctuary and the Sacred Mount of Oropa. From an environmental standpoint, it hosts the richest carabidological fauna of Piemonte, interesting for the endemic types, for the variety of species and for the size of the populations.
The Reserve stretches inside the dell – conca di Oropa - in a territory ranging in elevation from 750 to 2388 metres above sea level.
The area of the Sanctuary and of the Sacred Mount is surrounded by forests, mostly of beech trees, sometimes pure, but frequently mixed with mountain maple and ash at the lower levels, and with Mayflowers and mountain ash at higher elevations. Locally, between 1,600 and 1,700 metres, there are areas of pine trees planted for reforestation.
Recent floral research has led to the listing of at least 800 species of flowers in the dell of Oropa, a very high number, due to the variety of environments present in the area.
