The Sacred Calvary Mount of Domodossola

Protected Area Domodossola

The Special Natural Reserve of the Sacred Calvary Mount of Domodossola.

Surface area: 26 hectares,
Elevation: 279 - 414 metres,
Environment: hilly,
Year of founding as a Special Natural Park of the Piemonte Region: 1991

The hill called “Colle di Mattarella”, on which the complex of the Sacred Calvary Mount rises, has a very ancient history. Among the most important testimonies, there is the fragment of a paleo-Christian memorial tablet in marble going back to 539 A.D.; it is the oldest document attesting the presence of Christianity in Ossola.
On the hill there was once a castle originally built over pre-existing Roman structures in the Longobard period (6th century) and enlarged over the years.

The land at first is almost flat and one can see the ruins of the ancient convent and traces of fields and terraces once dedicated to farming. The wood, that covers about half of the area, has mostly chestnut, oak, British oak, and durmast trees. The higher levels feature a mixed vegetation with ash, black alder, poplars and birch, along with numerous exotic species introduced in the last century.

With the progressive abandonment of farming, the extension of the woods has encouraged the spread of the fauna, mainly birds, insects and small mammals.
