Return from the Pilgrimage to Jerusalem,
Re-proposal of the Events and the Places of the Holy Land in the Religious Imagination in the 15th and the 16th Centuries.

The Days of Study Di Ritorno dal Pellegrinaggio a Gerusalemme. Riproposizione degli Avvenimenti e dei Luoghi di Terra Santa nell’Immaginario Religioso fra XV e XVI Secolo, were an important event in the framework of the research and study activities on Devotional Complexes similar to the Sacred Mounts conducted by the Documentation Centre.
The meeting, held in Cosenza on the 12th and 13th of May 2005, enjoyed the participation of numerous experts in the field who tried to identify the characteristics and the particularities common to the Sacred Mounts of Piemonte and Lombardia included by the UNESCO in its World Heritage List, and the devotional complex of Laino Borgo.

The sanctuary of the Chapels of Laino Borgo (Cosenza) owes its name to the simple

constructions which, starting in 1557, the alms-collector monk Domenico Longo had built on his return from a journey in the Holy Land. The Laino Borgo complex, together with the Sacred Mounts of Varallo and Montaione, are re-proposals of the sacred buildings of Jerusalem and of Palestine (Grotta of the Nativity and S. Catherine on the Sinai), interpreted as “substitute pilgrimages”. Laino, Varallo and Montaione, distinguish themselves from the “real” Sacred Mounts, which after the Council of Trent underwent a change of a hagiographic type.

The Days of Study were organised by the Documentation Centre of the European Sacred Mounts, Calvaries and Devotional  Complexes  in collaboration with the University of Calabria and the Centro Studi Enrichetta Caterini.

Integrating the event, in 2008, a volume was published “The Return from the Pilgrimage to Jerusalem Di ritorno dal pellegrinaggio a Gerusalemme, that contains the Acts of the conference.
