Historical essay on the devotion to the Via Crucis
by Amilcare Barbero and Pasquale Magro.
Original edition of 1949, translated from French by Paolo Pellizzari.

Ponzano - Casale Monferrato (AL) 2004
ISBN 88-89081-01-5
pp. 148, € 13,00

PublicationsThe lack of recent studies on the history of devotion of the Via Crucis, motivated the italian translation and the publication of the essay of Padre Amédée (Teetaert) de Zedelgem entitled Aperçu historique sur la dévotion au chemin de la croix, which appeared posthumously in the autumn of 1949 in the magazine Collectanea Franciscana. The text is edited by the Documentation Centre of the European Sacred Mounts, Calvaries and Devotional Complexes in collaboration with the Franciscan Documentation Centre - Centro di Documentazione Francescana del Sacro Convento di San Francesco di Assisi.
Besides the essay, translated from French for the first time, the volume contains introductory texts, especially prepared, that modernise the theme and contents. Edited by Amilcare Barbero and Pasquale Magro, the book contains:

  • · A premise by Giovanni Battistelli, Custos of the Holy Land;
  • · An introduction by Father Michele Piccirillo, ordinary professor of Geography and Biblical History at the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum in Jerusalem;
  • · An essay by Guido Gentile, former head of the Superintendence of Archives -Soprintendenza Archivistica - for the Piemonte Region and the Valle d'Aosta.
The text of Amédée de Zedelgem describes forms of devotion, which, starting from the Middle Ages, developed around the Passion of Christ and converged then in the practice of the Via Crucis. Therefore, among the "devotions with immediate influence on the Via Crucis" it recalls the pilgrimages in the Holy Land, the monuments dedicated to the commemoration and to the imitation of the holy places, the series of stations that evoke the way of the Cross, the Calvaries and the Sacred Mounts.
