Nativity in the Sacred Mounts of Piemonte and Lombardia

Nativity in the Sacred Mounts of Piemonte and Lombardia

On Thursday, April 5th 2007, in Torino at the Piemonte Regional Council, a photograph exhibit was inaugurated, entitled “Natività nei Sacri Monti del Piemonte e della Lombardia” (Nativity in the Sacred Mounts of Piemonte and Lombardia). I featured a collection of photos taken by Pier Ilario Benedetto. The show and the catalogue that accompanies it (prepared by Carola Benedetto), were the fruit of the collaboration of the Documentation Centre of the European Sacred Mounts, Calvaries and Devotional  Complexes and the theatre company: Gruppo del Cerchio. From July 2007 to January 2008, the itinerant show was hosted at the nine Sacred Mounts included by the UNESCO in its World Heritage List.

The photo exhibit Natività nei Sacri Monti del Piemonte e della Lombardia offered a selection of pictures taken by the architect and photographer Pier Ilario Benedetto, who, in the nativities he visited in each Sacred Mount, was able to capture with black and white photos and close-up shots, the human, and also celestial aspects of the figures. The display included 30 pictures, measuring 40 x 50 cm., on cotton support, with 65 x 75 cm. frames.

For Carola and Pier Ilario Benedetto, “this exhibit wanted to concentrate attention on a universe of silence and exquisite poetry. The black and white images try to approach, with close-up examination, the model of cinema shoots and to bring out the human but also celestial  nature of the figures. So, the statues appear close and divine at the same time, simple and absolutely perfect: not just faces, but real signs that verge on a universe of serenity”.

Accompanying the photograph exhibit, a catalogue was prepared: Natività nei Sacri Monti del Piemonte e della Lombardia,  edited by Carola Benedetto.
