The Iconography of the Holy Trinity in the Sacred Mount of Ghiffa
The Context and Comparisons

Verbania 23-24 March, 2007.

During the international conference: The Iconography of the Holy Trinity in the Sacred Mount of Ghiffa, Context and Comparison (L’Iconografia della SS. Trinità nel Sacro Monte di Ghiffa. Contesto e Confronti), held in Verbania on the 23rd and 24th of March 2007, the depictions of the Trinity in the sanctuary and the chapels of the Sacred Mount of Ghiffa  were compared to the representations and the cult of the Holy Trinity in Italy and in Europe.
The conference sprang from a surprising discovery made inside the Sanctuary of the Sacred Mount of Ghiffa in October 2005, when, following the restoration of the seventeenth century cover of the front of the altar of the SS. Trinity, under the fresco, in which the divine persons were represented as three identical young men, there reappeared a fourth face of Christ with the crown of thorns, located at the height of the tabernacle and portrayed on the handkerchief of Veronica.
This little, but important discovery was the spark that set off an organisational work of historical research by the reserve administration that safeguards the Sacred Mount of Ghiffa, that

SS. Trinità

that led to the organisation of a wide-ranging conference that would compare this local finding with the portrayals and the cult of the Holy Trinity in Italy and in Europe.

So, a scientific committee was set up that brought together, collaborating with the managers of the Reserve coordinated by the director Claudio Silvestri, scholars and experts of other prestigious institutions, namely the ISAL (Istituto per la Storia dell’Arte Lombarda) of Cesano Maderno (MI), the Superintendency for the artistic, historical and demo-ethno-anthropological Heritage of Piemonte, the Diocese of Novara and the Documentation Centre of the European Sacred Mounts, Calvaries and Devotional  Complexes.

The committee worked to identify the various scholars active on the local, national and international scene who could offer their knowledge and experience to study and discuss the theme of the representation and the cult of the Trinity in Italy and in Europe.

The scholars who took part and spoke in the conference were the following: Giancarlo Andenna (Catholic University of Milano), Gianbattista Beccaria (Church History Association of the Church of Novara), Federica Bianchi, François Boespflug (the University of Strasburgo), Massimiliano Caldera (Superintendance for the Historical, Artistic and Demo-ethno-anthropological Heritage of Piemonte), Friar Agostino Colli (from the Theological Institute of Addis Abeba), Marina Dell’Omo (Superintendance for the Historical, Artistic and Demo-ethno-anthropological Heritage of Piemonte), Maria Luisa Gatti Perer (Professor Emeritus of the History of Modern Art at the Catholic University of Milano), Guido Gentile, Jessica Gritti (Catholic University of Milano), Father Pasquale Iacobone (Pontificia Università Gregoriana of Rome), Gian Vittorio Moro, Claudio Silvestri (Director of the Sacred Mount of Ghiffa), Gelsomina Spione (University of Piemonte Orientale), Angelo Torre (University of Piemonte Orientale), Dorino Tuniz, Danilo Zardin (University of the Sacred Heart of Milano).
